With summer behind us for another year and winter just around the corner, we are in that confusing time of year where the weather quickly changes from being warm one day to being cold the next. It is called autumn and it comes with many surprises!
The good news is if you enjoy working out outside, you can still do it comfortably. Yes, even on those days where it rains a little and clears up and then rains a little and clears up again. Getting a little wet has never stopped you before, has it?
There have been studies that show working out in the rain can make you work harder and burn more fat. If that is something you are after, you are in luck! Do to a difference in breathing, muscle exertion, temperature, and oxygen consumption, scientists have found working out in the rain to have more benefits than you might have assumed.
The key to working out in the rain is going prepared. While this should go without saying, you would be surprised how many people forget one or two of these simple tips and end up having a bad time!
So look no further, here are the best tips for working out in the rain!
Cotton clothing notoriously soaks up the rain. This isn’t ideal for two reasons: one, you will be soaking wet, and two, you will be weighed down by wet clothes. Instead of cotton, opt for a material such as polyester. Polyester will sweat-wick and quick-dry it’s way to the end of your workout and you will be thankful it did.
If you are doing a workout in the rain like running or jogging or track and field, you will need to be able to see where you are running so you don’t run into a car (or worse, a car runs into you). Wearing a baseball cap over your head will not only keep your hair dry but it will also block some of the rain from getting into your eyes.
If you are going to be outside while it’s raining, you will want to make sure your feet stay dry. You can do this one or two ways: get proper socks or get proper shoes. Whichever choice you make will be better than the alternative: going home with soaking wet feet and a cold on the way.
With that all said and done, get out there and enjoy your autumn workout! With it being such a beautiful time of year there is no reason why you wouldn’t want to be outside.
